Welcome to another edition of In Memoriam, The series where we pay our respects to the video game characters that are sadly no longer with us. Today we will be taking a look at the 2013 hit PlayStation 3 game, The Last of Us.
This article contains story spoilers. If you are yet to play the game (which I highly recommend you do) stop reading now.

The Last of Us launched in June 2013 to widespread critical acclaim, and is widely considered the best game available on the PlayStation 3. Video game fans worldwide embraced the game for its great gameplay and emotional story telling. On the outside it may look like a traditional post-apocalyptic zombie shooter, but the game’s developers, Naughty Dog, managed to put a unique spin on a very familiar concept.
The character this article discusses, meets her untimely demise at the start of the game. Sarah is the daughter of the main character Joel, and although her appearance is very short, her death drives the narrative for the rest of the game.
The Last of Us begins in Austin, Texas, on the night of Joel’s birthday, where Sarah gives him a new watch as a gift. A sudden outbreak of an infection, turning people into zombie-like creatures, starts to spread rapidly throughout the country. As Joel and Sarah attempt to flee the city, they are met by a soldier who is given orders to kill them. As I’m sure you have already realized, Sarah does not make it out alive.
The rest of the game takes place 20 years after the events described above. I don’t want to spoil too much, but just know that Joel’s missing his daughter is an integral part of the story.
There are many more heart wrenching moments throughout The Last of Us that are sure to stick with you for a long time after playing. Naughty Dog managed to create a game that will definitely go down in the history books.
