There aren’t many games out there that feature strong female characters, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Bayonetta being some of the notable exceptions. Enter Jotun, a title by Thunder Lotus Games, in which you play as Thora, a Viking woman who has died an inglorious death and must prove her worth to enter Valhalla.
Jotun is a hand drawn Kickstarter funded game that was Greenlit in under a week back in 2014, and released on PC in September 2015. It’s not long now until console players will be able to experience the hand drawn action exploration game, as it hits PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U this September.
The style is what sets Jotun apart from other titles, game designer and president of Lotus Games Will Dubé told LoadScreen “we have amazing artists at Thunder Lotus and we’ve always loved classic Disney and Studio Ghibli movies. Hand-drawn animation let’s the artist talk directly to the player. I think it’s just really beautiful and unique.”
Dubé said their goal while making the game was to create a “realistic Viking warrior. Thora has a massive axe and goes up against mythological beings that are hundreds of times her size. She’s a badass Viking and her character design shows it.”
This bad-ass axe can best be utilised in the Valhalla edition, which features a replayable boss rush mode with even fiercer versions of the already challenging Jotun. Jotun will be released on Wii U September 8 and PS4 and Xbox One on September 9.
