I remember my first, and only, attempt to play Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent in 2010 on PC. It was dark, very strange, and had an atmosphere of such dread and despair that I began sweating balls, shouted “NOPE,” and quit and never went back. As I’ve said before, horror games either excite me to press through the terror or scare me so much I have to leave if I want to sleep ever again at some point in my life.
The Dark Descent was very much one of the latter. And the good news for any of you crazy enough to play it, and haven’t already done so on PC, Frictional has announced the Amnesia: Collection is releasing on Playstation 4 November 22. The collection contains all three of the Amnesia games: The Dark Descent, Justine (the expansion) and A Machine for Pigs (developed by The Chinese Room).
Along with the announcement, Frictional also released a trailer for the collection featuring lots of clips from various YouTubers playing the games over the years. While I do enjoy watching YouTubers get scared in horror games sometimes (but don’t tell anyone), I feel it kind of doesn’t work as a means for a trailer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure some of the full proper videos are a gas, but these out of context moments of random voices squealing at things just doesn’t do the atmosphere of Amneisa justice.
Plus, I think you need to be a Markiplier level showman to make this sort of stuff compelling viewing.
