News broke this morning that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has died at the age of 55. A short statement said Iwata passed away on July 11 due to a “bile duct growth”.

Iwata began working for Nintendo in the 1980s, before being appointed director in 2000 and president in 2002. During his time as president, he oversaw the release of the GameCube, DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. He also was a regular host of Nintendo’s famous “Nintendo Direct” presentations, such as the incredibly-strange-yet grin-inducing puppet show at this year’s E3.

An icon among industry members and Nintendo fans alike, Iwata will be missed.
