Some photos surfaced this morning of what is being said to be the controller for the upcoming Nintendo NX console, a system whose rumour mill has speculated it could be some kind of console/handheld hybrid and, depending on survey results, a disc-less, 4K video streaming juggernaut. It is unconfirmed at this time if these pictures are the genuine article, and they probably won’t be until the NX is officially revealed by Nintendo. But they do show similarities to another leak earlier this month.
The pics were uploaded to Reddit by a user named “perkele37”, who says this controller is a developer’s kit version and isn’t necessarily the final design. The first shot shows the oval shaped controller with no face buttons, with just a screen covering its surface area with two joysticks on either side and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The second shot’s angle shows what perkele37 describes in the Reddit thread as “rollers” that “feel and look pretty much identical to a mouse scroll-wheel.” They also say they aren’t sure they will be included, at least in this form, in the final design.
perkele37 wrote that the joysticks are similar to the Circle Pad from the 3DS, where the bottom part is static and the thumb-stick slides around, and that the controller will have haptic feedback.
Uncertainty as to the legitimacy of these images notwithstanding, the idea of a home console with touch screen buttons is an interesting one. I can’t exactly imagine playing a complex RPG on something like that, but a Mario Bros platformer would certainly be doable. Also, if the NX is indeed a combo of a home console and a portable one, is this the portable part? Will it work autonomously? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, Reddit has already begun trying to find out where exactly the pictures were taken. Much like yesterday’s hunt for a photo of a Bioware employee’s t-shirt, Reddit users have been employing crazy detective skills in order to conjure up theories. The best one so far is looking at the reflection of a tree in the plastic computer monitor base in the top right of the first picture, and trying to find where it could be. Someone eventually landed on the theory that it is one of the trees out the front of Ubisoft developer Massive Entertainment’s headquarters:
But in a hilarious turn of events, other users have noticed that depending on which pictures you find of Massive’s HQ, the trees aren’t always there and some a crying Photoshop. And thus, another hunt has begun that one user has dubbed “Treegate”.
Hopefully we’ll learn more about the NX come E3 time.
