Modern Warfare Remastered requires a game disc to play

News

Hope you weren’t planning on immediately trading in/refunding that Legacy Pro edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare you’ve got on preorder with the hopes of keeping the Modern Warfare Remastered for free, because it looks like you’re going to need the disc in order to play it.

On the new website dedicated to the remaster of the 2007 hit, some fine print states (emphasis added): “Modern Warfare Remastered is a full game download (game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered).”

While the fine print doesn’t specifically say so, it’s pretty safe to assume the game disc being referred to is the Infinite Warfare disc as Modern Warfare Remastered is a digital download. Obviously digital purchases of the Legacy editions of Infinite Warfare are unaffected by this caveat.

The disc requirement tactic makes a lot of sense, as player hype around the new Modern Warfare is almost as high, if not higher, than for Infinite Warfare itself (as is the case for yours truly), and policies such as EB Games’ seven day money back guarantee make it easy to get your money back after redeeming digital codes. While EB does say “Online games or products requiring an activation code,” are excluded from their policy, a physical console copy of Infinite Warfare most likely won’t require an activation code, nor is it exclusively an online game, so it creates a loophole where customers could returned it for a full refund after having activated the included codes for extra content.

A disc requirement to use it shuts that whole idea down in stores where such policies apply. Sadly, it does mean you can’t trade Infinite Warfare in second hand anywhere without also sacrificing your remastered Modern Warfare.

So if you really just want a copy of Modern Warfare Remastered on its own, you’re going to have to hope Activision decide to sell it separately one day, as previously they’ve said it will only be available in the Legacy, Legacy Pro and Digital Deluxe editions. Fingers crossed!

Activision also recently released a trailer for Modern Warfare Remastered, and it certainly got this fan of the original salivating. Check it out below:

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and subsequently Modern Warfare Remastered, launches November 4, however preorder customers of the Playstation 4 version will get early access to Modern Warfare’s campaign mode in two days on October 5.
