Finally. Goddamn, mother-flippin’ finally.
The third season to Telltale Games’ harrowing The Walking Dead has a confirmed release date and is available to pre-purchase. Telltale quietly missed the window on the November release date they teased at PAX West, confirming on Twitter this morning A New Frontier’s first episode will arrive December 20, 2016 (most likely December 21 for those of us in Australia).

As we first glimpsed back at E3, A New Frontier will see an older Clementine surviving alongside a new character named Javier, both of whom will be playable in as yet undisclosed way. Perhaps jumping between characters throughout episodes, or maybe each episode being from a different character’s perspective? Or even choosing your character from the outset, encouraging replayability. We won’t have to wait long to find out.
The season pass can be preordered digitally on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, iOS and Android for US$24.99. A physical disc edition will be available on PS4 and Xbox One on February 17, 2017, including the first episode and a season pass for episodes two to five.
I for one am excited to see Telltale return to the series that launched them into the choose-your-own-drama juggernaut they are today. The Michonne focused miniseries came together in the end, but its roots in the comics removed a lot of tension regarding the main characters’ safety. But season one of Telltale’s The Walking Dead is still one of their greatest works, and season two was brutally bleak by the end.
Let’s just hope this season premiere is better than the one they had for the current run of the TV show, which tried to have its surprise-the-comic-fans cake and also eat it too by still appeasing them anyway. Still frustrated about that…
