The long rumored sequel to The Last of Us was announced at the annual PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this morning. The trailer rounded up the show, which had some other juicy announcements that we’ll get to later. It shows a grown up Ellie playing guitar surrounded by a bunch of dead bodies, in walks Joel and asks if she’s going to go through with something, to which Ellie responds she will kill every last one of them. Check it out for yourself:
Pretty cool stuff, right? So far we know virtually nothing about the sequel other than it features the original protagonists, which is interesting considering how the first ends. At this point we can only speculate about who Ellie is so keen to murder with song, there are a few contenders from the first game, with the Fireflies probably topping that list.
If you’re wondering if The Last of US even needed a sequel, Naughty Dog Creative Director Niel Druckmann stated via PlayStation.Blog:
“I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.”
Stay tuned for more news on The Last of Us Part II in the coming weeks.
