There are some pretty great The Last of Us Part II plot theories

Of course The Last of Us Part II being announced was always going to be a big deal, but what we perhaps didn’t anticipate is how the plot would be introduced to us. And in typical trailer fashion not too much was hinted at in the moody reveal last weekend. We were reintroduced to Ellie and Joel, with heavy hints of revenge and a sing song, but why is Ellie so worked up? Why didn’t we see Joel’s face? And what is up with that song? Fortunately the internet is a thing, so fan theories are EVERYWHERE. Let’s check in on a few.

Joel is dead

He has form on traumatising people by dying.

Probably the most common theory, and one that is maybe a little too predictable. Joel is never really seen explicitly in the reveal trailer, we see his silhouette (pretty ghostly) and then his soothing voice talking to Ellie. At the time Ellie has seemingly just killed a bunch of dudes, so she seems pretty zoned out with the guitar when Joel walks in, but is she actually hallucinating her old friend?

Joel being bumped off by a group of survivors would surely push Ellie over the edge and into a revenge fueled killing binge. However, in the trailer Joel is holding a revolver, so some fans have dismissed the theory outright by stating a ghost doesn’t need a gun… but what if Joel had commit suicide with said revolver?

Yikes, I know, bleak. But it’s not like the first game was a barrel of laughs. The ending of the original is extremely poignant, we know that Joel lied to Ellie and potentially sacrificed the possibility of a cure so he wouldn’t lose her, but the end also hints she knows he has lied. If that relationship soured, Joel wouldn’t have much to live for. He’s lost everyone he loves, and maybe the prospect of being eaten by a mushroom man mixed with the guilt was all too real, and now Ellie blames herself for his death.

However his demise comes about, the theory is running strong that Joel won’t be on his mortal coil in The Last of Us Part II.

Ellie lost her baby

Because that theme hasn't been explored.

Because that theme hasn’t been explored.

So we know that Ellie isn’t straight from the amazing Left Behind DLC, but her having a baby isn’t totally out of the picture. Remember that she is the carrier of an immunity to the cordyceps fungus, and because of this, her having babies is probably a high priority in terms of developing a cure for some groups. Not that she will definitely be behind the idea herself, after all the last attempt of extracting a cure involved slicing her brain up.

But there are a few groups who might want to imprison her, impregnate her and then take her baby, which would totally account for the revenge spree. This theory could involve either the fireflies or shady government groups as the antagonists. And hey, there’s a little bit more weight to this one than you may think, as an Uncharted 4 Easter Egg revealed this comic cover:

Uncharted has a history of revealing plot points for other Naughty Dog productions, remember the newspaper clipping in Uncharted 3 that revealed the fungus epidemic responsible for The Last of Us?

Is Ellie’s song revealing anything?

Shred it, gal.

I haven’t seen too much written about this, but hey I’ll throw my own theory into the mix, because why not? Ellie’s song fits in almost too perfectly with what’s going on in the world of The Last of Us. The song is Through the Valley by Shawn Jame, and yes it is dope, but check out the lyrics:

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
I fear no evil because I’m blind to it all.
My mind and my gun they comfort me,
because I know I’ll kill my enemies when they come.

Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell on this earth forevermore.
I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul,
but I can’t walk on the path of the right because I’m wrong.

Well I came upon a man at the top of a hill,
call himself the savior of the human race.
Said he come to save the world from destruction and pain,
but I said how can you save the world from itself.

Because I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
I fear no evil because I’m blind.
I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul,
but I know when I die my soul is damned.

The most prominent lyrics that Ellie sings in the trailer are “I can’t walk on the path of the right because I’m wrong.”

Has Ellie been naughty? This could be far fetched, but if we combine a couple of the theories, was she responsible for Joel’s death? Maybe inadvertently leading him to his death at the hands of the Fireflies, and now she is consumed by guilt, a guilt she can only rid herself of by “killing every last one of them”? Well the great thing about theories is that we don’t know, but it sure is fun speculating!
