People really liked Euro Truck Simulator 2 in the Steam Awards

OK, they also liked Grand Theft Auto V, but that hardly makes for a surprising headline.

Valve recently published the results of the first ever Steam Awards, where Steam users could nominate and vote for games to win trophies in some unconventional categories. The categories range from unsurprising things like the “Test Of Time” and “Just 5 More Minutes” awards, to weirder sounding, not overly descriptive ones like “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” and “Best Use Of A Farm Animal”.

Valve also included some user nominated categories, like the “Boom, Boom” award, but chose not to include the trolling ones like “Biggest Disappointment” (in which No Man’s Sky lead the nominations, rightfully so) and “Game That Deserves A Sequel” (Half Life 2: Episode 2, obviously).

Anyway, let us pour over the winners, as they are some interesting choices. As mentioned in this article’s headline, Euro Truck Simulator 2 was one of two games to win two categories, along with Grand Theft Auto V, so either there’s a joke I’m missing somewhere or I really need to give this game a go.

Villain In Most Need Of A Hug:

Portal 2

GLaDOS may have only wanted us gone by the end of Portal 2, but it was clearly a cry for some old TLC.

I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award:

Euro Truck Simulator 2

If Euro Truck Simulator 2 is as good as this award praise leads us to believe, this very hipstery accolade is well suited.

Test Of Time:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It’s a bit rich to see a game that was recently remastered to modern standards winning a “Test Of Time” award. Oh all right, that’s a bit harsh. Still funny though…

Just 5 More Minutes:

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Yep, the game right at the centre of the “games with addictive gambling elements” controversy wins the addictive game award. Who’d have thunk it.

Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!:

Grand Theft Auto V

While I would personally have thought the nominated Bioshock Infinite was more deserving of an award that describes itself as face-melting possibly due to a crazy plot twist, Grand Theft Auto V is still a stellar masterwork of the medium.

Game Within A Game:

Grand Theft Auto V

Hey, here’s GTA V again. Good for it.

I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye:

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Season 1

Damn straight this game won the sadness award. If you make it to the gut wrenching end of Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead without wanting to tear up, you have no soul.

Best Use Of A Farm Animal:

Goat Simulator

In a surprise twist, Goat Simulator wins the “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” award. Nah, I kid, I kid.

User Awards

Boom, Boom:

So, “Boom, Boom” went to DOOM. That was fun to write and fun to say.

Love/Hate Relationship:

Dark Souls III

While many would say you either love Dark Souls or you hate it, what they don’t realise is it actually makes us experience both emotions, frequently.

Sit Back And Relax:

Euro Truck Simulator 2

And here’s Euro Truck Simulator 2 again, apparently the most relaxing game on Steam. That US$4.99 is tempting me now.

Better With Friends:

Left 4 Dead 2

It may have too many numbers in its title, but Left 4 Dead 2 is certainly deserving of this award for being both a great co-op game and because it’s terrible to play by yourself.

Keen to see what categories they come up with next year! Perhaps a “Let Us Play Steam Games Offline Without Having To Have The Latest Updates” award would be nice. Or the “Game Best Suited To Charge Australians In Australian Dollars For” award. Yeah, that’s be great.
